Amit Shah Inaugurates Memorial Honouring 1857 Freedom Struggle
Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated a memorial in Ambala Cantonment on Thursday, celebrating the heroes of the 1857 uprising against British colonial rule. Named 'Azadi Ki Pehli Ladai Ka Shaheed Smarak', the site aims to inspire future generations and is spread across 22 acres. During his address, Shah called for a revisionist view of the 1857 events, arguing they should be seen as a war of independence rather than a mere revolt, encapsulating sentiments echoed by prominent Indian nationalist Veer Savarkar.
Shah remarked, 'I repeatedly bow to the soil where, on May 10, the freedom struggle of 1857 took place, shaking the foundations of the British Empire, which was believed to be invincible.' He highlighted the significant cost of freedom, stating, 'It is upon the foundation of the sacrifices made by those martyrs that we can, today, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, envision a Viksit Bharat (Developed India).'
The memorial includes 22 galleries that exhibit historical events tied to the uprising, utilising modern technology such as holography and interactive projections. Shah paid tribute to legendary figures of the rebellion, including Nana Saheb Peshwa, Maharani Lakshmibai, and Tatya Tope, among others. He said, 'A nation that fails to honour those who sacrificed their lives for its freedom cannot expect lasting progress.'
Shah also inaugurated the 23-kilometre Jalbehra-Shahabad National Highway project, valued at ₹1,260 crore, designed to enhance infrastructure in the region. While addressing the youth, he urged them to visit the memorial, stating it is essential to remember those who contributed to India’s fight for independence.
Shah's remarks also took aim at the opposition, specifically Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, regarding the issue of Minimum Support Price for farmers. He insisted that BJP-NDA governance would offer a better future for agriculture and farmers in Punjab and Haryana. He praised Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini for his effective governance, expressing confidence that the BJP would campaign for state elections only after fulfilling its promises.
The event was attended by various dignitaries, including Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and state BJP officials, who all highlighted the importance of remembering India's struggle for independence. The memorial, with its modern presentation and immersive displays, seeks to serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made for freedom, and a call to inspire national pride among India's youth.
