All 14 Crew Members Rescued After Dhow Engine Failure Near Oman
The Indian Embassy in Oman confirmed that all 14 crew members from the mechanised sailing vessel MSC Virat 1 were safely rescued after the vessel encountered an engine failure off the coast of Oman on 14 June 2026. The rescue operation was facilitated by local authorities, ensuring that the crew remained unharmed throughout the incident.
According to embassy officials, the crew members were reported to be "safe and in good health". They were transferred to the MV Jabal Ali, a cargo ship, which is on course to return to Mumbai. The Indian Mission stated via social media that the rescue operation involved co-ordination with ships in the vicinity, alongside Omani authorities.
The incident began when MSC Virat 1 developed engine complications while navigating waters near Oman. The crew managed to safely transfer to a liferaft following the malfunction.
Typically, Indian mechanised sailing vessels, such as the MSC Virat 1, are smaller crafts that transport essential items, particularly perishable goods, to Gulf countries. Measuring 50 metres in length and 12 metres in breadth, the vessel is often based in ports like Mumbai and Mandvi.
As the Gulf region continues to experience heightened tensions, this incident adds to the ongoing shipping concerns in the area. According to official sources, this type of vessel plays a critical role in regional supply routes, facilitating the movement of goods across challenging maritime zones.
The prompt rescue operation demonstrates the effectiveness of international maritime collaboration in ensuring crew safety during emergencies at sea. The Indian Embassy has expressed gratitude to the Omani authorities and the nearby vessels for their swift response and assistance during this incident.
This event underscores the importance of maritime safety protocols and the need for vigilance while operating vessels in potentially perilous conditions.
