Alison Byrnes MP Discusses Vision Issues as New Treatment Listed
Alison Byrnes, a Member of Parliament in Australia, has recently opened up about her personal battle with thyroid eye disease, a condition affecting thousands in the country. This discussion coincided with the announcement that Tepezza (teprotumumab) will be available through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), significantly reducing the cost of this treatment.
Byrnes revealed that her symptoms first surfaced after returning from a hiking trip along the Kokoda Track. Friends noticed something unusual about her eye, marking the beginning of her struggles with this rare autoimmune condition. Thyroid eye disease typically causes inflammation and swelling behind the eyes, resulting in discomfort, double vision, and in severe cases, loss of vision.
This disease primarily impacts women, with an incidence rate of approximately 80%. It is estimated to affect around 23,000 Australians, with 450 new cases diagnosed each year, according to health experts.
Byrnes described her experience, saying, "I had a feeling like sand in my eye," and noted her struggle with glare and double vision. Her symptoms have been debilitating, affecting her ability to perform daily tasks.
The inclusion of Tepezza in the PBS is expected to provide relief to patients like Byrnes. Previously, treatment options were limited and often required frequent visits to specialists, which posed difficulties for those living in more remote areas. As a political advocate, Byrnes has praised the PBS listing for making advanced treatment accessible to more Australians.
The Associate Professor at the Centre for Eye Research Australia, Jwu Jin Khong, emphasised the transformative impact of Tepezza, explaining that it provides a more effective approach to managing thyroid eye disease than traditional steroid treatments. Tepezza only requires administration every three weeks, contrasting with weekly treatments often required by other options.
Patients are hopeful that this new medication will not only alleviate physical symptoms but also enhance their overall quality of life. As Byrnes stated, the availability of such treatments gives many individuals renewed hope and recovery prospects.
The PBS listing for Tepezza is a significant development in the fight against thyroid eye disease, enabling patients to manage their symptoms more effectively and maintain their vision. The health community is optimistic that this medication will improve the lives of many Australians dealing with the challenges of this condition.
