Sabarimala Gold Theft Investigation Faces Credibility Issues
Sabarimala Gold Theft Investigation Faces Credibility Issues
Concerns raised over the credibility of the Sabarimala gold theft investigation amid allegations of political interference.

The investigation into the Sabarimala gold theft has come under scrutiny following allegations that two officers connected to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) have been appointed to the Special Investigation Team (SIT). V D Satheesan, the leader of the opposition in Kerala, has voiced concerns that these appointments undermine the integrity of the inquiry. He claimed that the names of the two inspectors were presented to the High Court and accepted, with alleged backing from senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers and a high-ranking official from the CPM’s crime branch.

In a statement made on Wednesday, Satheesan accused these officials of attempting to sabotage the investigation, stating, "This same officer, notorious for filing false cases against Congress leaders while in charge of law and order, is attempting to undermine the inquiry for CPM." He further alleged that there is interference from senior IPS officers aimed at weakening the SIT's effectiveness and diverting the investigation away from the actual culprits.

Satheesan expressed his belief that this group is attempting to leak information regarding the SIT's operations to the government to protect those involved in the gold smuggling case. He called for an urgent review from the High Court to address these concerns, suggesting that the ongoing efforts could potentially compromise even the court’s intervention in the matter.

Adding to the controversy, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary, K C Venugopal, commented on the High Court's recent remarks about the investigation process. He noted that the court had expressed serious concerns over the SIT's actions, which were described as shocking. "The High Court stated that SIT's actions are raising serious doubts. Now it is SIT's responsibility to act in accordance with high court's observations and identify all those responsible for the Sabarimala theft," Venugopal stated.

The Sabarimala temple, located in Kerala, is a significant pilgrimage site and has been at the centre of various controversies in recent years, including issues surrounding its traditions and accessibility. The current investigation into the theft of gold and other valuables has further complicated the political landscape in the region, highlighting the intersection of religion, politics, and law enforcement.

As the situation unfolds, the credibility of the investigation remains a critical concern for both political leaders and the general public, as they await further developments from the SIT and the High Court's response to the allegations raised.
