Afghan Cyclist Fariba Hashimi Wins Silver Medal at Asian Games
Fariba Hashimi, an Afghan cyclist, secures silver at the Asian Games, inspiring women amid Taliban restrictions on freedom and sports.

Fariba Hashimi, a determined Afghan cyclist, has achieved a significant milestone by winning a silver medal at the Asian Games held in Nagoya, Japan. The 23-year-old athlete has gained attention not only for her sporting prowess but also for her remarkable journey of resilience as she disguised herself as a man to train in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime.

Hashimi secured second place in the women’s road race, finishing just behind China's Guo Li. Following her triumph, she expressed her emotions, describing the win as 'something special.' She recounted the adversities she faced while pursuing her passion for cycling, including instances where she was attacked with stones. Along with her sister, Yulduz, who is also a professional cyclist, Hashimi trained under challenging circumstances, highlighting the restrictions placed on women in her home country.

Reflecting on her experiences, Hashimi stated, 'I was born inside a country where the women who dream are getting attacked, and I’m really happy that I have fought against that.' Her sentiment resonates in a country where Taliban authorities have curtailed women's freedoms since their return to power in 2021, including access to education and sports.

The athlete hopes her success will inspire future generations of women in Afghanistan to realise their dreams without fear. 'I hope that the next generation will come here and represent their country without any fear,' she added.

Since fleeing Afghanistan, Hashimi relocated to Italy with the support of Alessandra Cappellotto, a former world champion cyclist. She now resides and trains in Italy, preparing for future competitions, including the upcoming Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. 'I never want to give up and hopefully we can see what can happen again in Los Angeles,' Hashimi remarked.

In addition to her accomplishments on the track, Hashimi expressed gratitude to the Japanese team for their support during the event, acknowledging that her preparations were less than ideal. 'I’m here without a mechanic, without any preparation. We brought one guy with us from the national federation, and he just drove the car. We were fixing the bike ourselves. I was the mechanic for myself. Thank you to the Japanese team. They were really, really nice to me, fixing my bike,' she said.

Fariba Hashimi's journey from the constraints of her home country to winning a medal on an international stage exemplifies resilience and determination, offering hope and inspiration to many women aspiring to break barriers in sports.
