Actor Vijay Enters Politics with Candidacy in Tiruchi East

C. Joseph Vijay, the president of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, is set to make his political debut in the Tiruchi East constituency during the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections scheduled for 2026. The noted actor commenced his campaign on September 13, 2025, starting from Marakkadai, a historically significant political area that has influenced local politics for over 75 years.

In this competitive constituency, Vijay will face Inigo S. Irudayaraj from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party and K. Rajashekaran from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). Tiruchi East has a diverse electorate comprising approximately 2.17 lakh voters, with Christians and Muslims representing around 35% of the voter base.

Inigo S. Irudayaraj, the incumbent MLA, has commented on Vijay's candidacy, suggesting that the actor has miscalculated the political dynamics of the constituency. “I am prepared for the challenge. My connections with local organisations and commitment to community service will secure my victory,” Irudayaraj stated in a response to the announcement. He also expressed skepticism about Vijay's decision to contest in multiple constituencies, indicating that it reflects a lack of confidence. “It sends a wrong signal to his party cadre,” he added about Vijay's approach.

Vijay's entry into the political arena marks a significant moment in Tamil Nadu's political landscape, particularly as he transitions from a successful career in film to seeking elected office.
