ABVP Wins Majority in Delhi University Students' Union Elections

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has emerged victorious in the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections, claiming three of the four key positions. The results, released on Saturday, revealed that Yash Dabas was elected as president, while independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen won the vice-presidency. The Congress-backed National Students' Union of India (NSUI) did not secure any of the top posts.

In a competitive presidential election, Yash Dabas of ABVP received 24,576 votes, defeating NSUI candidate Vijai Shankar Meena by a margin of 2,053 votes. Deepanshu Shokeen, who ran independently after not securing a nomination from NSUI, garnered 30,615 votes to take the vice-president role.

The DUSU elections concluded on a high note, with a voter turnout of approximately 40.46%. Amid rising tensions, the election was marked by campaign disputes between ABVP and NSUI. Following the election, ABVP leaders expressed confidence in their planning and execution. Their campaign achievements included successful union elections in several colleges, including Aditi Mahavidyalaya and Sri Aurobindo College.

NSUI's chief, Vinod Jakhar, had previously projected optimism about their chances, asserting that they were prepared for a successful output. The NSUI had fielded a strong team, including candidates for various central posts, reflecting significant campaigning over recent months.

During the election cycles, security protocols were strictly adhered to. Notably, approximately 960 electronic voting machines were deployed over two shifts to ensure efficient voting across multiple college campuses. The Chief Election Officer, Professor Raj Kishore Sharma, stated that a careful count was maintained to enhance transparency in the results.

Despite the anticipation of a calm election period, various reports detailed concerns regarding breaches of campaign regulations. Instances of excessive noise from vehicles and physical confrontations among student groups were noted, drawing attention to persistent issues surrounding student elections in Delhi.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised the ABVP for its success, interpreting the victory as a reflection of student sentiments aligning with national development themes. In a statement on social media, Shah suggested the results serve as a strong counter-message to any 'anti-national forces' within student politics, remarking on the significance of youth empowerment in shaping India's future.

The results indicate a shifting political landscape in students' organisations at Delhi University, with younger and diverse representatives coming into leadership roles. ABVP victory celebrations included recognition for candidates with achievements in sports, highlighting a blend of diverse experiences among the new leadership team.
