Abhishek Banerjee Attacked During Visit Amidst Post-Poll Tensions
Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), was attacked by a hostile crowd during a visit to Sonarpur in West Bengal on May 30, 2026. The confrontation occurred as he attempted to reach the home of a party worker reportedly killed in recent post-poll violence. Eyewitnesses reported that protesters hurled stones and eggs, forcing security personnel to shield the TMC leader.
Banerjee claimed the assault was orchestrated by supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and directly accused them of attempting to 'kill' him. 'They are trying to break the house and they want to kill me,' he stated, referencing safety concerns during the altercation. As the mob chanted ‘chor chor’ (thief), local women amongst the crowd expressed deep resentment towards him, accusing the TMC of corruption and neglect.
Videos circulated on social media showed Banerjee navigating the tumultuous scene wearing a helmet, his shirt torn and spectacles damaged as he sought to reach the residence of the deceased. The situation escalated significantly before police reinforcements arrived to escort him safely away. Despite the attack, Banerjee reiterated his commitment to addressing the families of those affected by political violence.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited her nephew after the incident and condemned the attack, posting on social media, “RULERS BECAME KILLERS - shame on you BJP.” The incident follows a series of violent altercations involving TMC workers after the BJP's electoral victory in West Bengal.
The BJP, however, dismissed the incident, arguing that such violence should be condemned regardless of political affiliations. Samik Bhattacharya, the president of the BJP in West Bengal, called for calm, stating that violence has no place in democracy. Banerjee’s visit was intended to show solidarity with the family of Sanju Karmakar, the TMC worker who lost his life.
The confrontation raised questions about the security provided during Banerjee's visit, with the TMC leader claiming officials had been informed in advance. He affirmed his intent to seek legal recourse, stating, 'We will definitely let the high court know about this.'
While many locals expressed anger towards Banerjee, citing years of dissatisfaction over governance and corruption, others pointed to his previous comments during the campaign that reportedly incited hostility.
Congress leaders also weighed in, with Mallikarjun Kharge urging the West Bengal and central governments to ensure the safety of opposition leaders, labelling the attack as indicative of a troubling political climate. Rahul Gandhi called it an instance of 'vengeful politics' prevalent in the current atmosphere. The incident underscores the heightened political tensions in West Bengal, with both major parties exchanging accusations and facing fierce public sentiment in the aftermath of the elections.
