Aam Aadmi Party Tensions Escalate as Raghav Chadha Responds
Tensions within the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have intensified following recent comments made by Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Raghav Chadha. On Sunday, Chadha posted a video compilation of his speeches to rebut allegations from party colleagues that he had not adequately represented Punjab's interests in Parliament. He described the criticism as part of a 'coordinated narrative' against him. "To my colleagues in AAP who were forced to issue videos saying that âRaghav Chadha failed to raise Punjabâs issues in Parliamentâ, here is a small trailer. Punjab isnât a talking point for me.
It is my home, my duty, my soil, my soul," he stated in a tweet. The tension arose after AAP leaders from Punjab, including Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema and state unit chief Aman Arora, publicly expressed their dissatisfaction with Chadha's performance. They accused him of failing to address key state issues in his parliamentary speeches and noted that he had not raised any significant concerns during his tenure. Cheema remarked that Chadha's silence was inconsistent with the values the party espouses.
In a bid to defend his record, Chadha shared his video, highlighting his parliamentary efforts on a variety of subjects, including air pollution, the rights of gig workers, and issues surrounding mobile prepaid plans. He asserted that his actions reflected a commitment to the public interest, including that of Punjab.
He reaffirmed his dedication to bringing Punjab's issues to the forefront in Parliament. Additionally, party leaders outlined various key issues pending attention, including Rural Development Fund dues of approximately âč8,500 crore, losses from the Goods and Services Tax estimated at nearly âč60,000 crore, and funding shortfalls for the National Health Mission. They also highlighted the Centre's delay in releasing âč1,600 crore in flood relief funds promised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after last year's floods.
Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, another senior AAP leader, noted that flood-affected residents felt overlooked, with their concerns not addressed on a national scale. This ongoing feud comes in the wake of Chadha's recent removal from the position of Deputy Leader in the Rajya Sabha, indicating a shift in the party's dynamics.
The party leadership has also communicated with the Rajya Sabha Secretariat to limit Chadha's speaking opportunities in Parliament, marking a significant change in the party's approach towards Chadha, who was once considered a leading figure. This rift also suggests a larger restructuring within AAP, following the earlier fallout with another Rajya Sabha MP, Swati Maliwal. The exchange of rebuttals highlights the underlying fractures within AAP, even as it remains in power in Punjab.
