Indian Railways Introduces New Coach Designs for Passenger Comfort
Indian Railways is modernising train coaches to enhance comfort and safety for passengers, with upgraded designs and improved facilities.

Indian Railways is launching significant upgrades to train coaches as part of a broader initiative aimed at improving passenger comfort and safety. Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw made this announcement through a post on the social media platform X on Sunday.

The new designs for train coaches incorporate enhanced features, particularly focusing on improving toilet facilities. Vaishnaw noted that an existing coach has been retrofitted to showcase these newly developed features, thereby creating a sample coach that exemplifies the intended upgrades.

β€œTo enhance the safety and convenience of passengers, the railway has prepared models of coaches with new designs and better toilet facilities,” Vaishnaw said. A video accompanying his post highlighted the upgraded interiors and the improved sanitation options that aim to provide a more comfortable travel experience for users of the rail network.

This initiative is part of Indian Railways' efforts to elevate the overall travel experience across its extensive network. In tandem with the coach upgrades, significant infrastructure enhancements are underway, particularly at the New Delhi Railway Station. Vaishnaw described the ongoing redevelopment project as progressing swiftly, emphasising safety and passenger convenience in its planning and execution.

The redevelopment plan includes the installation of around 1,500 artificial intelligence-enabled cameras to bolster surveillance and security at the station. Furthermore, there are initiatives to provide identification cards and uniforms to railway staff and vendors to facilitate better identification, alongside new signage that will aid passengers in navigating the premises effectively. To enhance connectivity, the railway station will also be integrated with taxi services to improve last-mile transport options.

Vaishnaw has underscored the improvements in railway safety that have been achieved in recent years. In a recent written response to the Lok Sabha, he reported a substantial decline in serious train accidents, claiming nearly a 90 per cent reduction in incidents over the past few years. Official records indicate that serious railway accidents reduced from 135 in the fiscal year 2014-15 to just 14 in the period leading up to 2025-26 (up to February 28). Over a decade-long period, the total number of serious accidents fell from 1,711 between 2004-05 and 2013-14 to 678 from 2014-15 to 2023-24, which also reflects a notable decrease in casualties and injuries associated with train travel.

The ongoing upgrades and safety improvements reflect Indian Railways' commitment to enhancing the quality of travel for passengers, aiming for a more secure and comfortable journey on its trains.
