6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Northeastern Afghanistan
A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck northeastern Afghanistan, with tremors felt in surrounding areas including parts of India.

A significant earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck northeastern Afghanistan on Saturday, June 27, 2026, according to seismic monitoring agencies. The quake impacted eastern provinces, notably Khost and Nangarhar, and sent tremors as far as the Indian capital, Delhi.

Authorities from the United States Geological Survey reported that the quake originated 43 kilometres south of Jurm, with an epicentre located at a depth of 208.3 kilometres (129 miles). The initial assessments indicated no immediate reports of casualties or structural damage.

In northern Pakistan’s Swat district, residents experienced severe shaking, prompting panic and emergency responses. Daniyal Ahmad, a local resident, described the intensity of the quake, stating, “It was very huge here in Swat, and it lasted for quite a long time.” Many individuals hurriedly left their homes, with reports indicating that women and children exhibited signs of distress during the tremors.

The earthquake struck at approximately 19:04 IST, and while the geological data suggest it was a deep quake, which often reduces its destructive capacity near the surface, the fear and uncertainty it generated among local populations were evident.

As the region continues to assess the situation and the implications of the earthquake, seismic experts are monitoring the aftershocks and any potential developments resulting from this event.

Authorities urged residents in affected areas to stay informed through official channels and updates regarding safety measures and any necessary evacuation procedures.
