Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made history by surpassing Indira Gandhi’s consecutive tenure as the Prime Minister of India. As of 25 July 2025, Modi has completed 4,078 days in an unbroken term, edging past Indira Gandhi's record of 4,077 days, which lasted from 24 January 1966 to 24 March 1977. This occasion marks a significant milestone in Modi's political career, reflecting not only his leadership but also the support he commands from the electorate. Modi, who has been in office since 2014, continues to govern after winning three successive general elections. He achieved victories in 2014, 2019, and 2024 elections, becoming the first Prime Minister from a non-Congress party to serve two full terms in office. In comparison, Indira Gandhi also returned to power in 1980 after a brief hiatus, serving until her assassination in 1984. However, her longest continuous period in office remains unrivalled until now. Jawaharlal Nehru holds the record for the longest uninterrupted tenure as Prime Minister of India, but Modi shares the distinction of winning three consecutive electoral mandates with him. Modi's consistent electoral success reflects a shift in the political landscape of India, where non-Congress parties have gained prominence in recent years. Modi’s record also extends to being the longest-serving leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His predecessor, Atal Behari Vajpayee, was elected three times but did not complete two continuous terms due to various political challenges. Vajpayee served a government for only 13 days in 1996, then for a year before another short-lived term. Furthermore, Narendra Modi holds the distinction of being the first to serve as a chief minister at the state level and as Prime Minister at the national level for an extensive duration. Having assumed office as the Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001, Modi served in that position until he became the Prime Minister in 2014. As Modi continues his term, it remains to be seen how his leadership will adapt to the evolving political and economic challenges facing India. Experts note that his administration has focused on various initiatives aimed at transforming the country’s infrastructure and economy. In a statement regarding this achievement, Modi expressed gratitude for the public's trust and emphasised his commitment to furthering development in India. "With great responsibility comes the need for greater dedication. I aim to serve the people and elevate India’s position on the world stage," he stated. As he progresses in his leadership role, the impact of his policies and governance style will likely shape India’s future dynamics and its role on the global front.
