An Indian social media influencer has come under intense scrutiny in Turkey following the release of several controversial videos that led to calls for his arrest and eventual detention, according to local media reports.

Malik SD Khan, who operates under the pseudonym Malik Swashbuckler, allegedly filmed and uploaded videos during his travels in Turkey in which he made derogatory and sexually explicit comments about local women. The remarks were spoken in Hindi, seemingly under the assumption that they would go unnoticed by Turkish viewers. However, the videos quickly spread on social media, prompting widespread condemnation.

According to Turkiye Today, Khan was detained by Turkish authorities after users flagged the offensive content. While no official statement has been issued by Turkish police, the incident has triggered significant public outrage in the country.

In one of the videos, the YouTuber reportedly asked viewers if he should assault a Turkish guide, a remark that was met with particular alarm. Other clips showed Khan entering a local shop, demanding to know why there was no Indian flag on display, and using abusive language toward the shopkeeper. In additional footage, he referred to Turkish women using objectifying and misogynistic terms.

The videos, initially posted on Khan’s YouTube and Instagram accounts, have since been deleted. Despite their removal, screenshots and re-uploads continue to circulate online.

Public Reaction and Apology
The backlash against Khan has been swift and vocal. Many Turkish citizens, along with viewers from other countries, criticised the content and urged authorities to take legal action. Social media platforms were flooded with comments condemning the YouTuber’s behaviour and demanding accountability.

In response to the growing controversy, Khan posted a video message on his social media channels in which he issued a public apology in Turkish. “I sincerely apologise from the bottom of my heart. It was never my intention to offend or upset anyone,” he said. “Knowing that I have hurt people truly makes me very sad.”

He added that he had reflected on his actions and promised to exercise greater care and sensitivity in the future.

Context:
The controversy comes amid strained relations between India and Turkey. Tensions have recently escalated due to Ankara’s vocal support for Pakistan during a military operation referred to by Indian media as Operation Sindoor, following a terror attack in the Kashmir region.

However, many Indian and Turkish social media users have emphasised that Khan’s actions are a separate matter, unrelated to geopolitical dynamics. “Anyone going abroad represents his or her country. Disrespecting others should be punishable,” wrote one Indian user on X (formerly Twitter).

Calls for continued legal action have been echoed across social media, with some users expressing hope that Turkish authorities would ensure a thorough investigation.

As of now, there has been no formal confirmation from the Turkish government regarding Khan’s detention or whether any charges have been filed. The incident remains under public and media scrutiny as further details are awaited.
