Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson has become the first batter to score 4000 runs for the franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL), achieving the feat during his team’s final league-stage match of the 2025 season against Chennai Super Kings in New Delhi.
The milestone was reached on Tuesday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, where Samson scored 41 runs from 31 deliveries, helping Rajasthan chase down a target of 188 with six wickets in hand. His innings included three fours and two sixes.
Milestone in a decorated IPL career
With this latest performance, Samson’s total stands at 4027 runs in 149 IPL matches for Rajasthan Royals, cementing his position as the team’s highest-ever run-scorer in the competition. He has recorded two centuries and 23 half-centuries for the franchise, maintaining an average of 31.70 and a strike rate of 141.24.
Samson’s contribution extends beyond the IPL. Including his appearances in the now-defunct Champions League Twenty20, he has scored 4219 runs in 155 matches for the Royals.
The 2024 season was his most productive to date, during which he amassed 531 runs at an average of 48.27 and an impressive strike rate of 153.46.
From debutant to leader
Sanju Samson made his debut in the IPL in 2013. After spending two seasons away from the side when Rajasthan Royals were suspended from the league, he returned to the franchise in 2018 and has remained a central figure ever since.
In 2022, Samson captained Rajasthan Royals to the IPL final—marking their first appearance in the title match since the inaugural edition in 2008, which the team won. His leadership and consistency with the bat have been widely acknowledged as key factors in the team’s performances over recent seasons.
Rajasthan’s successful chase
In Tuesday’s match, Rajasthan Royals were set a target of 188 after Chennai Super Kings posted a competitive total. Samson came in to bat in the fourth over after the early dismissal of opener Yashasvi Jaiswal. He reached the 4000-run landmark in the seventh over and anchored the innings before falling with the team well on course for victory.
Other significant contributions came from Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Dhruv Jurel, who played pivotal roles in the successful chase.

Sanju Samson joins an elite group of Indian Premier League players who have surpassed the 4000-run mark for a single team. His achievement stands out within Rajasthan Royals, a franchise that has seen notable batters such as Jos Buttler, Ajinkya Rahane, and Shane Watson contribute heavily in previous seasons.
According to official IPL statistics, Buttler follows Samson with 3055 runs for the Royals, while Rahane and Watson scored 2810 and 2372 runs respectively.
Samson also has experience with Delhi Capitals, where he played during the 2016 and 2017 seasons. Across all IPL appearances, including those for Delhi, he has amassed 4665 runs in 177 matches.
