Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was accorded a warm welcome on his arrival in Mauritius on a two-day visit on Tuesday (March 11, 2025), described the country as a valued friend. The visit was an opportunity to explore new avenues for collaboration in various sectors, Prime Minister Modi said after he was received at the airport by Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam in a special gesture.

“Landed in Mauritius. I am grateful to my friend, PM Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, for the special gesture of welcoming me at the airport. This visit is a wonderful opportunity to engage with a valued friend and explore new avenues for collaboration in various sectors.

Today, I will be meeting President Dharam Gokhool, PM Navinchandra Ramgoolam and addressing a community programme in the evening,” Prime Minister Modi said on social media platform X.

This is the second time that Prime Minister Modi will attend the National Day celebrations of Mauritius as Chief Guest; the first was in 2015.

Prime Minister Modi called on Mauritius President Dharambeer Gokhool at the State House in Port Louis and exchanged views on deepening the special and close bilateral ties between India and Mauritius.

“In this context, they recalled the shared history between the two countries and the existence of strong people-to-people linkages,” the MEA noted. President Gokhool later hosted a State lunch in honour of the visiting Indian Prime Minister.

Mauritius is one of India’s key partners in the Indian Ocean as well as a close maritime neighbor. India is also a preferred development partner for Mauritius and has undertaken several economic development and capacity building initiatives in the country.
