“Deeply concerned” by situation in West Asia, says India after Israel strikes Iranian military sites

India raises concerns about the ramifications for peace and stability in the region
India has expressed its deep concern over the “evolving escalation” in the situation in West Asia after Israel carried out precision strikes on military sites in Iran on Saturday (October 26, 2024).
Indian missions in the region were in touch with the Indian community, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said as it expressed concern about the ramifications for peace and stability in the region and called for a return to dialogue and diplomacy.
“We are deeply concerned by the evolving escalation in West Asia and its ramifications for peace and stability in the region and beyond,” India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement issued on Saturday.
India also called on the parties concerned to exercise restraint, saying the ongoing hostilities were to nobody's benefit, and sought a return to dialogue and diplomacy to address the situation as the Israeli strikes on Iran raised fresh fears of a full-blown war between the two nations. News reports have quoted the Israeli military as saying that the military sites in Iran targeted on Saturday were used to make missiles fired at their country over the past year.
“We reiterate our call to all concerned to exercise restraint and return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy. The ongoing hostilities are to nobody’s benefit, even as innocent hostages and civilian populations continue to suffer,” the MEA statement said. “Our Missions in the region are in contact with the Indian community," the MEA added.
The situation in West Asia figured in the discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in New Delhi on October 25, 2024.
Noting that the issue was discussed in “considerable detail,” Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said, “On West Asia, both sides expressed concern at the developments there and expressed the hope that the already serious conflict which has caused a lot of damage and casualties and destruction does not expand further and does not bring more actors into its ambit and that parties concerned can find a path back through dialogue and diplomacy and reach an agreement on the issues there”.
Earlier this month, expressing deep concern at the escalation of the security situation in West Asia after Iran launched a barrage of ballistic missiles towards Israel on October 1, 2024, India had reiterated its call for restraint, urging that all issues be settled through dialogue and diplomacy.
“We are deeply concerned at the escalation of (the) security situation in West Asia and reiterate our call for restraint by all concerned and protection of civilians,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement issued on October 2, 2024.
The MEA urged that issues be addressed through dialogue and diplomacy to prevent the conflict from getting bigger. “It is important that the conflict doesn’t take a wider regional dimension and we urge that all issues be addressed through dialogue and diplomacy,” it stated.
