Luxembourg PM Frieden appreciates India’s role in supporting an early end to conflict in Ukraine
"Had a good conversation with Prime Minister @LucFrieden. Reiterated commitment to deepen and strengthen India-Luxembourg ties including in the areas of trade, investment, financial services and industrial manufacturing. As democracies, we support regional and global peace and stability," Prime Minister Modi said on X, formerly Twitter.
According to the Indian Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Prime Minister Frieden called Prime Minister Modi and congratulated him on re-election for the third consecutive term. Prime Minister Modi thanked him for his wishes and expressed hope to add vigour and momentum to the multifaceted cooperation between the two countries.
"Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to work towards further strengthening bilateral partnership in diverse areas including trade, investment, sustainable finance, industrial manufacturing, health, space and people-people connect," the PMO said.
Prime Minister Modi has extended an invitation to H.R.H the Grand Duke Henri and PM Frieden for a visit to India, the PMO added.
Warm & Friendly Bilateral Relations
India and Luxembourg enjoy warm and friendly relations marked by a high degree of understanding at the bilateral as well as multilateral levels. Trade and investment are an integral part of India-Luxembourg relations.
Ties between the two nations received a boost when Prime Minister Modi and the Prime Minister of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg Xavier Bettel held the first-ever India-Luxembourg Virtual Summit on November 19, 2020.
During their talks, the leaders noted with satisfaction the development of cordial and friendly relations between the two countries over more than seven decades since the establishment of diplomatic relations. They welcomed the growing economic relationship between the two countries and called upon businesses to explore further opportunities for expanding the economic relationship.
One of the outcomes of this bilateral summit was the institutionalisation of Foreign Office Consultations (FOC). The 2nd round of India-Luxembourg FoC, held in New Delhi on April 9, 2024, saw both sides take stock of the entire gamut of bilateral relations and discuss new avenues for future cooperation.
The FoC was preceded by the 18th meeting of the Joint Economic Commission of India and BLEU (Belgium Luxembourg Economic Union).
Last year, India and Luxembourg had jointly issued a commemorative stamp honouring the work of renowned sculptor Amar Nath Sehgal and to mark 75 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The birth centenary year of Sehgal, the modernist artist who had made Luxembourg his second home for nearly a quarter of a century, ended in February 2023. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on July 1, 1948.
