The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned the Canadian Deputy High Commissioner in New Delhi on Monday (April 29, 2023) and lodged a strong protest over the raising of separatist slogans on ‘Khalistan’ at an event which was being addressed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

India conveyed its deep concern at such disturbing actions being allowed to continue unchecked at the event.

India's action came a day after pro-Khalistan slogans were raised repeatedly during the Khalsa Day celebrations in the presence of Prime Minister Trudeau on Sunday (April 28, 2024). Canadian opposition leader Pierre Poilievre also attended the event.

"The Government of India’s deep concern and strong protest was conveyed at such disturbing actions being allowed to continue unchecked at the event. This illustrates once again the political space that has been given in Canada to separatism, extremism and violence," the MEA stated.

According to the MEA statement, "Their continued expressions not only impact India-Canada relations but also encourage a climate of violence and criminality in Canada to the detriment of its own citizens"
