Key India-funded community development project inaugurated in Chitwan, Nepal

Since 2003, India has launched over 551 High Impact Community Development Projects in Nepal.
This project is one of the 106 High Impact Community Development Projects in Bagmati Province
In a significant stride towards enhancing Nepal’s infrastructure and community resilience, the Embankment and Launching Apron Dhungre Khola River Training Works project at Khairahani Municipality, Chitwan, was inaugurated on April 26, 2024. This initiative, funded by the Government of India at a tendered cost of NRs.36.74 million (approximately Rs 2.3 million), marks another milestone in the Nepal-India Development Cooperation.
The project, located in the municipality of Khairahani in Chitwan, is designed to combat agricultural land erosion, mitigate deforestation, and shield local communities from frequent floods and other natural calamities associated with the river dynamics. The strategic implementation of the embankment and apron will foster increased resilience among the community, significantly reducing the risk posed by the ever-changing river landscapes.
The inauguration ceremony was a collaborative affair, graced by Shashi Kumar Khaniya, Mayor of Khairahani Municipality, and Avinash Kumar Singh, First Secretary at the Embassy of India, Kathmandu. The event was also attended by a host of public representatives, government officials, project committee members, and local social workers.
This project is not just a construction endeavor but a symbol of the robust development partnership between India and Nepal. Implemented under the High Impact Community Development Project (HICDP) scheme, it exemplifies the enduring bilateral cooperation aimed at uplifting the lives of Nepali people through strategic infrastructure enhancement.
The local leadership and project stakeholders expressed deep appreciation for India’s continuous support in the region. Mayor Shashi Kumar Khaniya highlighted the project’s significance in providing much-needed stability and security to the local populace affected by natural adversities.
Since 2003, India has launched over 551 HICDPs across various sectors in Nepal, successfully completing 489 of these projects. The initiatives cover an array of essential sectors including health, education, and environmental protection, with this project in Chitwan being one of the 106 HICDPs in Bagmati Province.
In addition to infrastructure projects, India has also generously donated 1009 ambulances and 300 school buses to various Nepalese institutions over the years, commemorating important national days like Independence Day and Republic Day. These contributions have significantly bolstered local healthcare and education infrastructure, particularly in Bagmati Province where 236 ambulances and 99 school buses have been provided, including 17 ambulances and 5 school buses in Chitwan District.
As close neighbors with shared aspirations and mutual interests, the ongoing cooperation under the HICDPs banner reflects a shared commitment to the socio-economic upliftment of Nepal’s populace.
