“We are closely monitoring the security situation in Myanmar,” the MEA said
India has relocated its diplomatic staff from Sittwe Consulate to Yangon as security situation in Myanmar has become precarious, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Friday,

“You know, the security situation in Myanmar remains precarious and deteriorating. You heard about the fighting that is going on, especially in Rakhine State and other areas,” MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during a weekly press briefing on April 12.

“We are closely monitoring the security situation in Myanmar, particularly in the Rakhine State. Necessary steps have been taken to ensure the safety of our citizens,” the MEA Spokesperson said.

He said that some time back an advisory had been issued for “our nationals so that they can take due care and we want them to be safe.”

“In view of the deteriorating security situation, disruption of means of telecommunications, including landlines, and severe scarcity of essential commodities, all Indian citizens are advised not to travel to the Rakhine State in Myanmar,” the MEA said in its travel advisory issued on February 6.

On a question regarding the alleged kidnapping of three Indian nationals in Myanmar, the MEA Spokesperson said, “Our embassy is seized of the matter. They are working on it and hopefully we will be able to get them out, repatriated and returned. They will come back home.”

“In the past as well, as and when Indian nationals who have had problems in Myanmar, one way or the other, in one profession or the other, whenever they have reached out to the Embassy, we have acted proactively and we have got the help of local authorities and done our best so that our nationals can come back home; or their issue, whatever issue or problem that they have, is resolved,” he added.

Since the military seized power in a coup in February 2021, Myanmar has been in turmoil. Regular occurrences of clashes between Myanmar military and rebels have brought in chaos and instability across the Southeast Asian nation. These rebels have captured several border trade and crossing points on the frontiers with India, Bangladesh, Thailand, and China.
