In a decisive move to protect its citizens amidst Haiti's escalating conflict, India has launched ‘Operation Indravati,’ facilitating the safe evacuation of Indian nationals to the safety of the Dominican Republic.
According to information shared by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday (March 21, 2024), the operation has successfully relocated 12 individuals, marking a significant step in India's commitment to safeguarding its citizens no matter where they are in the world. This mission reflects the country's dedicated approach to crisis management and citizen safety on an international scale.
“India begins Operation Indravati to evacuate its nationals from Haiti to the Dominican Republic. 12 Indians evacuated today. Fully committed to the security and well-being of our nationals abroad. Thank the Government of the Dominican Republic for their support,” EAM Jaishankar posted on social media platform X.
Haiti has been under a state of emergency since some groups attacked the country's largest prison in Port-au-Prince earlier this month, killing and injuring police and prison staff and allowing some 3,500 inmates to escape.
Since then, gangs have been attacking government institutions and law and order has virtually collapsed in Haiti. The chaos has forced tens of thousands to flee their homes.
Last week, the Ministry of External Affairs said about 50 to 60 people had registered to return to India. “If the situation arises, we are ready to evacuate everybody. We have established a control room here. We have established a control room in our Embassy,” MEA Official Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on March 15, 2024.
