Reaffirming their commitment to continue to strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak have discussed different aspects of bilateral ties between the two nations, including the proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

Prime Minister Modi had a telephonic conversation with his British counterpart on Tuesday (March 12, 2024), the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said.

“The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to continue to strengthen the bilateral Comprehensive Strategic partnership. They expressed satisfaction on the progress made under the Roadmap 2030 in diverse areas including trade, investment, defence, security, emerging technologies and others,” the PMO said.

According to the PMO, they “assessed positively” the progress made towards early conclusion of a mutually beneficial Free Trade Agreement. The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and global developments of mutual interest.

The two countries had decided on a new and transformational ‘Comprehensive Strategic Partnership’ during the India-UK Virtual Summit between Prime Minister Modi and then British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on May 4, 2021. They had also agreed on a Roadmap 2030 to steer cooperation for the next 10 years.
Since then, several meetings have been held at the top levels of both governments to review progress on Roadmap 2030.
