Continuing India’s outreach to African nations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Mozambique President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi on the sidelines of the 10th Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit in Gandhinagar on Tuesday (January 9, 2024).

“Glad to have met President Filipe Nyusi of Mozambique in Gujarat. The meeting was made special by the fact that he has an old association with the state, having studied a course @IIMAhmedabad. Our talks focused on defence, trade, energy, cultural linkages and more,” Prime Minister Modi said in a post on social media platform X.

Enriching India-Mozambique Relations

The leaders' discussions covered a wide range of issues, underscoring the mutual commitment to deepen the partnership in various fields.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Prime Minister Modi expressed his strong commitment to support Mozambique’s development priorities. Both leaders held productive discussions on ways to further bilateral ties, including in the areas of defence, counter terrorism, energy, health, trade & investment, agriculture, water security, mining, capacity building and maritime cooperation.

In a notable suggestion, Prime Minister Modi said that the two countries could work to enhance air connectivity to give a boost to business, culture and people to people relations.

According to information provided by the MEA, President Nyusi expressed his gratitude for India's inclusion of the African Union (AU) in the G-20, highlighting the importance of cooperation in multilateral fora, including the United Nations. He also thanked India for its ongoing support in Mozambique's development projects, capacity building programs, and maritime security efforts.

Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India's strong commitment to supporting Mozambique's development priorities. He fondly recalled President Nyusi’s participation in the Voice of the Global South Summit, which took place in January and November 2023, as a testament to their growing partnership.

The discussion concluded with the leaders agreeing to maintain the momentum of high-level political contacts, ensuring continued collaboration and mutual growth.

PM Modi interacts with corporate leaders

This meeting set the stage for subsequent interactions with global CEOs, aiming to develop policies that enhance India's global diplomatic influence.

The Indian Prime Minister held talks with the Representative Director and President of Suzuki Motor Corporation Toshihiro Suzuki.

Their discussion focused on Maruti Suzuki's strategies to position India as a prominent player in the international automotive sector. This includes exporting vehicles manufactured in India and incorporating international best practices in vehicle scrapping and recycling within the Indian context.

CEO of A.P. Moller Keith Svendsen also held a meeting with Prime Minister Modi in Gandhinagar. The Prime Minister expressed his support for their expansion initiatives in the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City).

Their talks covered vital issues such as the advancement of green hydrogen technology and the development of logistics infrastructure, which are key to enhancing sustainable growth and efficiency in the sector.

Vice Chancellor of Australia's Deakin University Iain Martin met with Prime Minister Modi to discuss enhancing cooperation between academic and government institutions in cybersecurity. Deakin University's first international branch campus was inaugurated recently at GIFT City, Gandhinagar.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister encouraged collaboration with Indian universities for research and innovation. Martin highlighted Deakin University's focus on industry needs in curriculum development, particularly in cybersecurity and business analytics, and noted the high demand for Australian education in India at reduced costs.

The Australian High Commissioner Philip Green, leading an Australian delegation at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, emphasized Australian investment interests in education, agri-tech, infrastructure, and technology.

With a series of redefining meetings on the sidelines of 10th Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, the outcomes project a future replete with robust collaborations and mutual growth for India and its global partners.
