U20 strives to establish a lasting practice of engagement among cities
The Urban 20 (U20) Engagement Group under India's G20 Presidency will hold its Mayoral Summit in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar on July 7-8, 2023. The summit will culminate in a Policy Communiqué to be handed over to India's G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant and Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs and Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri.

A city diplomacy initiative, U20 strives to establish a lasting practice of engagement among cities to develop a collective message that emphasizes the role of cities in taking forward the sustainable development agenda.

The summit will host delegates, knowledge partners, and participants, including Mayors, Deputy Mayors, in addition to city officials, from across the world and from different parts of India. The goal of the summit is to inform G20 negotiations of urban priorities.

The meet is being organised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), the Technical Secretariat of U20, and the U20 Conveners, C40 Cities and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG).

The Mayoral Meet will be inaugurated by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel and Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Kaushal Kishore. It is being hosted by Mayor of Ahmedabad Kiritkumar J Parmar. G20 Sous Sherpa Abhay Thakur and MoHUA Secretary Manoj Joshi will offer insights into the development of Indian cities.

As the theme of the G20 under India’s presidency is “One Earth One Future One Family,” the U20 places focus on environmental responsibility, climate finance, and cities of the future.

Thus, this summit is divided into the following priority themes to be taken up for discussion by delegates from different cities of the world, like Tokyo, Riyadh, Paris, and Surat.
* Encouraging environmentally responsible behaviours
* Accelerating climate finance
* Ensuring water security
* Promoting local culture and economy
* Reinventing frameworks for urban governance and planning
* Catalysing digital urban futures

The summit also includes the following Spotlight Sessions:
* Decarbonising the Built Environment
* Mainstreaming Women, Youth and Children in Urban Development
* Redefining City Investments: a global urban framework utilizing future technologies
* Closing the Loop: circular economy in water, wastewater and solid waste
* Building Climate-Responsive and Resilient Cities
* Making Data Work for People

The knowledge partners for U20 include the World Economic Forum, C40 Cities, All India Institute of Local Self Government, UNESCO, UNICEF, GIZ, and ICLEI. Speakers include members from UN Agencies, World Bank Group, International Finance Corporation, and other multilateral organisations and development banks.

Delegates will visit the GIFT City (Gujarat International Finance Tec-City) in Gandhinagar as part of the summit, explore the architecture of Ahmedabad, visit Sabarmati Ashram, and make trips to various urban development initiatives undertaken in Ahmedabad. The summit will also offer a chance for cultural exchange.
