PM Modi advocates synergy of tradition & technology at G20 Agriculture Ministers' Meeting

Emphasizing the importance of agriculture in securing the future of humanity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has highlighted India's policy of combining traditional practices with modern technology to address challenges in the sector.

In a video message to the G20 Agriculture Ministers' Meet, Prime Minister Modi, highlighted India’s policy of a fusion of ‘back to basics’ and ‘march to future’ and said that India is promoting Natural Farming as well as Technology-enabled Farming. “Farmers all over India are taking up natural farming now”, the Prime Minister said.

In his message, he noted that agriculture provides a livelihood for over 2.5 billion people globally and accounts for almost 30 percent of GDP and over 60 percent of jobs in the Global South.

Prime Minister Modi spoke about India's promotion of natural farming and technology-enabled farming, with farmers focusing on rejuvenating the earth, protecting soil health, and using organic fertilizers and pest management solutions. He also mentioned the use of solar power, soil health cards, and drones by Indian farmers to boost productivity.

The United Nations, recognizing the numerous benefits of millets, has declared 2023 as the International Year of Millets. Millets, also known as superfoods, have gained attention worldwide due to their exceptional nutritional value and sustainability.

According to Prime Minister Modi, these ancient grains are not only highly nutritious but also require less water and fertilizer compared to other crops, making them environmentally friendly and economically viable for farmers. He pointed out that India is developing an Institute of Millets Research as a Centre of Excellence for sharing best practices, research and technologies in millets.

Prime Minister Modi urged the G20 Agriculture Ministers to focus on global food security, sustainable and inclusive food systems, and strengthening global fertilizer supply chains. He also emphasized the need to adopt agricultural practices for better soil health, crop health, and yield, and to empower farmers with innovation and digital technology.

India's G20 priorities in agriculture include healing "One Earth," creating harmony within "One Family," and giving hope for a bright "One Future." The Prime Minister expressed support for the "Deccan High-level Principles on Food Security and Nutrition" and the "MAHARISHI" initiative for millets and other grains.
