Operation Kaveri was launched on April 24, 2023
Nearly 3,000 Indian nationals have been evacuated from strife-torn Sudan in the week since Operation Kaveri was launched on April 24, 2023. Early on Monday morning (May 1, 2023), a C-130J flight from the Indian Air Force carried 122 stranded Indians, including senior citizens, from Port Sudan to Jeddah. This was the 16th batch of Indians to have left the north African country.

“IAF C-130J flight carrying 16th batch of evacuees takes off from Port Sudan. 122 passengers onboard this flight are en route to Jeddah. Nearly 3000 persons have now left Sudan under #OperationKaveri," Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi wrote on Twitter, shortly past midnight on Sunday. “Respect and regard to our senior citizens being evacuated from Sudan. #OperationKaveri,” he added.

"IAF C-130J flight carrying 16th batch of evacuees landed at Jeddah as part of #OperationKaveri carrying 122 passengers. Special care provided to the elderly," the Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia tweeted a few hours later.

When Operation Kaveri was launched, approximately 3,500 Indian nationals and about 1,000 Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) were estimated to be in Sudan.

Sudan is currently facing a severe crisis due to the ongoing clashes between the army and paramilitary forces, resulting in widespread bloodshed.

According to reports coming in from the north African country, hundreds of people have died and thousands of people wounded since the beginning of the armed conflict between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy and current leader of the potent paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo. The evacuations have been carried out during a ceasefire between the warring factions.

Two Indian Air Force C-130 aircraft and three Indian Navy Ships INS Sumedha, INS Teg, and INS Tarkash have been transporting Indian nationals from Port Sudan to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia under Operation Kaveri. They are then being flown back to India in batches.

"There's a full triangulation of efforts between (the) control room in Jeddah through our Consulate and Mission in Riyadh, through the control room team in Port Sudan, which is the northeastern coast of Sudan and our Embassy in Khartoum city," Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra had said at a special media briefing on Thursday (April 27, 2023).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had chaired a meeting on April 21 to review the evolving situation and directed the preparation of contingency plans to evacuate Indian nationals from Sudan.

It may be recalled that India had launched a massive exercise, Operation Ganga, to evacuate Indians from Ukraine after Russia launched its military offensive on February 26, 2022.
