India had launched Operation Kaveri on April 24, 2023
The first batch of stranded Indians has left conflict-hit Sudan under Operation Kaveri, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said on Tuesday.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had announced the launch of Operation Kaveri through a tweet on Monday (April 24, 2033), days after Prime Minister Modi's directions to prepare contingency evacuation plans for Indians stuck in Sudan.

"First batch of stranded Indians leave Sudan under #OperationKaveri. INS Sumedha with 278 people onboard departs Port Sudan for Jeddah," Bagchi tweeted, sharing a video of the Indian Navy's INS Sumedha leaving Port Sudan.

The north African country is currently going through a serious crisis as a result of the civil war that has broken out in the country due to the tussle between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy and leader of the potent paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.

Intense fighting, which began on April 15, reportedly claimed the lives of several hundred people before a temporary ceasefire was declared; this window is being used by many countries, including India, to evacuate civilians.

On Sunday, the MEA had said that two Indian Air Force (IAF) C-130J military transport aircraft had been placed on standby in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. INS Sumedha had arrived at Port Sudan as the government made all out efforts to ensure the safety and security of Indians stranded in Sudan. On Monday, after Operation Kaveri was launched, about 500 Indians had reached Port Sudan.

On Thursday (April 20, 2033), the MEA had described the situation on the ground in Sudan as very "tense". The Indian authorities were focusing on ensuring the safety of Indians wherever they were located in the country, MEA Official Spokesperson Bagchi had said at the weekly media briefing.

Apart from the Sudanese authorities, the MEA and the Indian Embassy in Sudan has also been in regular touch with the UN, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, and US among others.
