In talks with the country’s top leadership during his two-day visit to Uganda, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar discussed closer cooperation in trade investments, energy, and defence. Discussions during the visit also explored the possibility of air connectivity between the two countries.

These issues were among those discussed when he met Uganda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs General Jeje Odongo in Kampala on Tuesday. The meeting came a day after EAM Jaishankar called on Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and discussed closer cooperation between the two countries.

EAM Jaishankar shared key points from the discussions he had with his Ugandan counterpart in a series of tweets.

EAM Jaishankar also participated in the virtual groundbreaking ceremony of solar powered piped drinking water supply systems funded by the Exim Bank of India in Uganda. This project will provide safe and sustainable water supply to half a million Ugandans across 20 rural districts.

On Monday, EAM Jaishankar had called on Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni in Kampala to discuss trade, energy, and defence cooperation. During the meeting, the two leaders also agreed to cooperate in agriculture, ICT, and development of the pathogenic community.

In a series of tweets following the meeting, EAM Jaishankar said, ''Privileged to call on President @KagutaMuseveni of Uganda at his farm in Rwakitura. ''Discussed cooperation in trade & investment, infrastructure, energy, defence, health, digital and agricultural domains. Congratulated Uganda on assuming the chairship of the NAM and affirmed our strong coordination at multilateral forums including the United Nations,'' he added.

EAM Jaishankar also met the Parliamentary Forum on Indian Affairs in Kampala on Tuesday, and urged them to look at possibilities offered by the Indian Development Partnership initiatives.

He is scheduled to visit Mozambique next. The visits come as India looks to strengthen its ties with African nations.

During his address to the Ugandan Parliament in July 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had outlined the ‘10 guiding principles for India-Africa engagement’, which came to be known as the Kampala Principles. During his current visit, EAM Jaishankar has reiterated that these principles will be further implemented with a focus on digital, green, and health projects.

In recent years, India has increased its engagement with Africa, particularly in the areas of trade, investment, and development cooperation. India's focus on Africa is seen as part of its broader strategy of expanding its global presence and increasing its influence in the region.

Uganda, for its part, is an important partner for India in Africa. The two countries have a long history of cooperation, with India providing technical assistance and development aid to Uganda for many years. The two countries have also increased their economic ties, with India becoming one of Uganda's top trading partners.
