The White House also said that it had recognised Arunachal Pradesh as a territory of India for a long time
The United States views its relationship with India as one of the most consequential in the world, the White House said on Tuesday.

“When we look at the relationship with India, it’s one of the most consequential relationships that the United States has in the world,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at her daily news conference. She was responding to a question on what Presidential message new US Ambassador Eric Garcetti was carrying for the people of India.

“Ambassador Garcetti will be leading an ambitious effort to deepen our cooperation with India in critical and emerging technologies, expand our defense cooperation, and strengthen our economic and people-to-people ties,” she explained. According to the White House Press Secretary, President Joe Biden sees the US-India relationship as an important one.

During the briefing, the White House Press Secretary also reiterated that the United States has recognised Arunachal Pradesh as a territory of India for a long time.

She was responding to a question seeking to know the US view on China renaming 11 places in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. “We strongly oppose any unilateral attempts to advance territorial claims by renaming localities,” she added.

The US stand came even as India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) rejected this latest attempt at renaming places in Arunachal Pradesh by China.

In response to media queries, MEA Official Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said on Tuesday, "We have seen such reports. This is not the first time China has made such an attempt. We reject this outright”.

“Arunachal Pradesh is, has been, and will always be an integral and inalienable part of India. Attempts to assign invented names will not alter this reality,” Bagchi added.

China’s move to rename 11 places in Arunachal Pradesh came amid the standoff at several points along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with India in Eastern Ladakh. A violent face-off between troops from both sides in Galwan Valley had seen 20 Indian soldiers being killed in June 2020. The Chinese side also suffered a large number of casualties though it has never released the number officially.

The standoff prompted India to mobilise troops along the LAC with China, including in Arunachal Pradesh, to thwart any attempts to violate its territorial integrity.

Talks at the diplomatic and military levels have led to the disengagement of troops along several friction points in Eastern Ladakh; discussions are ongoing regarding some other areas of confrontation.
