The appointment reflects India's commitment to promoting social justice on the global stage

India has been elected as the chair of the 62nd session of the United Nations Commission for Social Development (CSocD). This marks the first time since 1975 that India has held this position.

Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations Ruchira Kamboj was elected to the position on India's behalf on Wednesday.

As a functional commission of the Economic and Social Council, the CSocD plays a crucial role in facilitating international cooperation on social development issues,

According to the Permanent Mission of India to the UN in New York, the commission periodically reviews matters related to the implementation of the Copenhagen Declaration on Social Development, the Programme of Action of the World Summit for Social Development, and the outcome of the twenty-fourth special session of the General Assembly.

The 62nd session of the Commission will prioritize the theme of “Fostering Social Development and Social Justice through Social Policies to accelerate Progress on the Implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and to achieve the overarching goal of poverty eradication”. This theme emphasizes the fundamental connection between social development and social justice in achieving Sustainable Development Goals.

Ambassador Kamboj's appointment as Chair of the CSocD reflects India's commitment to advancing social development and promoting social justice on the global stage. India's leadership in this critical forum will undoubtedly help drive progress on a range of social development issues, from poverty eradication to sustainable development, and beyond, the Permanent Mission of India to the UN noted.

India's election to the Chair of the 62nd session of the Commission for Social Development is a significant development in the global effort to promote social development and advance the Sustainable Development Goals.
