Prime Minister Modi said the centre signifies the close cultural cooperation between India and Sri Lanka
The iconic Jaffna Cultural Center (JCC), which was built with the Indian government's grant assistance, was dedicated to the people in the presence of Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Saturday.

President Wickremesinghe thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian government for the centre. He also thanked India for the support extended to Sri Lanka during the economic challenges.

According to the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka, President Wickremesinghe highlighted the cultural similarities between the two countries and noted that India and Sri Lanka were the two sides of the same coin.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described it as an important initiative signifying the close cultural cooperation between India and Sri Lanka.

"The Jaffna Cultural Center is an important initiative signifying the close cultural cooperation between India and Sri Lanka. It will benefit several people. The august presence of President Ranil Wickremesinghe made the programme even more special," he tweeted.

"I will never forget my special visit to Jaffna in 2015, where I had the opportunity to lay the foundation stone for the Jaffna Cultural Centre," PM Modi added as he shared some photographs from the visit.

PM Modi had laid the centre's foundation stone during the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Jaffna in May
2015. The facility was virtually inaugurated during the visit of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to Colombo in March 2022.

Attending a colourful event at the centre, India's Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying and Information & Broadcasting L Murugan announced a special financial assistance scheme to 100 students from economically weaker families in University of Jaffna. Murugan also highlighted that the Indian government had implemented numerous people-centric projects cutting across sectors in Northern Province.

The event to dedicate the centre to the people was also attended by High Commissioner of India Gopal Baglay, Sri Lankan Ministers Douglas Devananda (Fisheries) and Vidura Wickramanayake (Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs), Sri Lankan Minister of State Kadar Masthanseveral (Rural Economy), several Parliamentarians and eminent persons from various walks of life.

The state-of-the-art facility consists of multiple facilities. These include a museum of two floors; an advanced theatre-style auditorium for more than 600 people; a 11-storeyed learning tower; a public square which could also act as an amphitheater; air-conditioned exhibition galleries; open exhibition and a 100-seat conference facility.

"JCC is an outstanding example of GOI’s ongoing commitment to the people of Sri Lanka including in the Northern Province. GOI’s development partnership with Sri Lanka which touch upon all aspects of daily lives such as infrastructure development, education, health, housing, livelihood development etc currently stands at USD 5 billion," the Indian High Commission said.
