President Droupadi Murmu also conferred the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards (PBSA) 2023
The Indian Diaspora has become an important and unique force in the global system, President Droupadi Murmu said on Tuesday as she addressed the valedictory session of the 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention.

Speaking during the event in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, she said the Diaspora has grown into an energetic and confident community in every region, and is making stellar contributions to world affairs in leadership positions.

"Our Diaspora has exhibited extraordinary dedication and hard work, and has overcome many challenges to achieve excellence in all walks of life – including art, literature, politics, sports, business, academics, philanthropy, science and technology," she told the gathering.

President Murmu pointed out that over the last two decades, the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention has served as a unique platform to enable fruitful engagement between the Government, people of India and the Diaspora.

Referring to the theme of this year’s Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention - 'Diaspora: Reliable Partners for India’s Progress in Amrit Kaal', the President said that it reflects India’s desire to make its Diaspora a partner in the achievement of its national developmental goals.

She also conferred the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards (PBSA) 2023 on 27 Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).

The President of India awards the PBSA to non-resident Indians, people of Indian origin, or organisations or institutions founded and run by non-resident Indians or people of Indian origin in recognition of their exceptional accomplishments both in India and abroad.

Earlier, in his welcome remarks at the Valedictory Session, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar appreciated the Indian Diaspora's dedication, commitment and perseverance that has led to their enviable reputation in their respective societies.
