The first Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya will be established in Srinagar

The J&K administration will set up three Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) and 10 Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) across 10 districts.

Officials at the directorate of education, Kashmir confirmed that three JNVs will be established in Srinagar, Pulwama and Bandipora, said a report in Kashmir Monitor. JNVs are run by Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, which is an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Human Resource Development. It's a fully residential and co-educational school, affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) with classes from VI to XII standard.

The Kashmir Monitor quoted an officer saying that this will be the first time that JNV will be established in Srinagar. He said 240 kanals of land are needed to set up the institute in Srinagar as its a big establishment with multi-storeyed buildings and hostel facilities, staff accommodation, all of which will be equipped with modern facilities for students.

However, 240 kanals of land is not available in Srinagar. We are now looking for a minimum of 100 kanals, the report said. Zahoor Ahmad, Principal JNV Baramulla and representative of Novodiya Vidyalaya Samiti said students from class 6 can get admission to JNVs after qualifying the entrance test. 75 per cent of seats are reserved for rural children and 25 per cent for urban children. And 33 per cent of seats are reserved for girl students both from rural and urban, the report said.
