Zimbabwe Women Secure First ODI Victory Against West Indies

Zimbabwe's Women’s cricket team achieved a significant milestone by securing their first One Day International (ODI) victory against the West Indies Women. The match took place on Sunday in Harare, where Zimbabwe triumphed by four wickets, thereby leveling the ongoing three-match ODI series at 1-1. This match marked only the second-ever ODI encounter between the two teams, making the win particularly noteworthy.

In the contest, West Indies’ captain Hayley Matthews won the toss and decided to bat first, aiming to establish a robust target similar to their commanding victory in the series opener. However, the Zimbabwean bowlers had other ideas and successfully restricted the West Indies to a total of just 139 runs in 39.3 overs.

Key contributions from Matthews, who scored 26 runs, and Stafanie Taylor, who made 47 runs, were insufficient as the West Indies collapsed to 88 for 7 at one stage. Towards the end, minor contributions from Afy Fletcher, who scored 15, and Ashmini Munisar, who remained not out on 20 runs, allowed the team to reach the 139-run mark.

The standout performer for Zimbabwe was Nyasha Gwanzura, whose impressive bowling figures of four wickets for 33 runs represented the best of her career. Additionally, Michelle Mavunga took three wickets, while Francisca Chipare and Olinder Chare contributed with two and one wicket, respectively.

In response, Zimbabwe began confidently, establishing a 67-run opening partnership between Modester Mupachikwa, who scored 38 runs off 57 balls, and Kelis Ndhlovu, who hit 30 runs off 56 balls. Despite West Indies taking two quick wickets in a bid to shift momentum, Zimbabwe remained resilient, with captain Josephine Nkomo scoring 30 runs from 53 deliveries.

Gwanzura later contributed an unbeaten 18 runs, which helped Zimbabwe secure the victory comfortably with 55 balls remaining in the match.

The series is now tied at 1-1, with the final match scheduled to take place at the same venue on September 30, 2023.
