Dhruv Rathee clarifies backlash over his video on Bollywood beauty standards, amid accusations of targeting actress Janhvi Kapoor.

In recent days, Indian YouTuber and political commentator Dhruv Rathee has faced significant public backlash following the release of his new video titled 'The FAKE Beauty of Bollywood Celebrities'. The controversy intensified when viewers speculated that Rathee had aimed his criticism at Bollywood actress Janhvi Kapoor, who had recently condemned the lynching of a Hindu man in Bangladesh.

The controversy erupted on December 25, the same day Kapoor made her post about the tragic incident involving Dipu Chandra Das, a garment worker who was killed in an act of mob violence. In her message, Janhvi Kapoor described the act as ‘barbaric’ and called for an end to hypocrisy regarding such incidents. Following her post, Rathee's video was released, leading many to connect the two events and assume that he was mocking her.

In light of the backlash, Rathee took to social media to clarify his intentions. He emphasized that his video was prepared prior to Kapoor's post and that any assumptions about targeting her were unfounded. In his response, he said, “God has given you a brain, so why don’t you use it? You’ll keep blindly believing whatever the IT cell keeps posting.” Rathee argued that the idea he could have produced and edited a detailed video within such a short time frame was unrealistic.

Rathee pointed out that he had previously addressed issues concerning Bangladeshi Hindus in his content, stating, “So why would I criticise that? I’m not someone who takes indirect digs at others; if I have something to say, I say it directly.” He also mentioned that he has a history of discussing the societal impacts of plastic surgery, which was the primary focus of his video.

In response to criticisms about his video thumbnail, which featured Kapoor, Rathee explained that he often uses multiple thumbnails and did not intend to single her out. He reiterated that his video's content does not centre on Janhvi Kapoor but rather on broader discussions around cosmetic procedures and their implications.

As for the incident that triggered Janhvi Kapoor's post, Dipu Chandra Das was reportedly attacked and set on fire by a mob in Bhaluka, Mymensingh, over allegations of blasphemy. The incident has drawn international condemnation and raised awareness about the treatment of religious minorities in Bangladesh.

Despite the ongoing discussion, Janhvi Kapoor has not publicly responded to Rathee's clarifications or the surrounding controversy. As the situation evolves, it highlights the complexities of social media discourse and the rapid spread of assumptions in the digital age.
