X Temporarily Suspends Account for Mohan Bhagwat's NYC Event

The account of the American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue (AHEAD), the group organising the New York event featuring Mohan Bhagwat, was briefly suspended on the platform X on Thursday before being restored. The event is scheduled to take place at Madison Square Garden on August 29. In a statement, the AHEAD forum expressed gratitude to X for reinstating their account. They attributed the suspension to what they described as attempts by 'misguided opponents' to manipulate the platform’s algorithm, leading to their account being temporarily blocked.

The group stated, "We remain confident that our communications have consistently promoted universal peace, oneness, harmony, and constructive interfaith and intercultural dialogue in accordance with X's policies." The account had shown as 'unavailable' to users, but the AHEAD forum believed it was a misunderstanding.

This incident occurred shortly after New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani publicly disapproved of the rally and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the organisation Mohan Bhagwat leads. Mamdani remarked, "I don't support the rally, but I don't know if the city has any jurisdiction on cancelling a private event." His comments have sparked varied reactions within India, with some politicians voicing their support for his stance while others have opposed it.

Mohan Bhagwat is currently on a tour that includes stops in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. He is set to headline the ‘Universal Oneness Celebration’ slated for later this month. Amidst the excitement surrounding the event, concerns have also been raised regarding Bhagwat's presence in the United States. A United States Congress-established advisory group on religious freedom has urged the Trump administration to annul Bhagwat's visa, citing worries about the RSS and its alleged history of violence against religious minorities.

In response, the Government of India has characterised the advisories from the advisory body, known as the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), as biased and lacking credibility. Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, "It is a biased organisation. We do not expect that the USCIRF will engage with the reality of India's pluralistic framework."

The upcoming rally and the controversies surrounding it have highlighted the tensions around the RSS's influence, especially in the context of rising nationalism and its impacts on religious minorities in India. As the event approaches, both the organisers and critics continue to express their beliefs about the broader implications of the gathering and its representation of Indian society.
