Widespread Protests Erupt Across Europe Amid Economic Concerns
Protests in Europe escalate due to rising living costs, housing crises, and political dissatisfaction, with clashes reported in multiple countries.

Demonstrations swept across several European countries over the weekend as citizens voiced their frustrations regarding the increasing cost of living, housing affordability, education, and government accountability. Major protests occurred in France, Italy, Albania, Spain, and Portugal, with many devolving into clashes with law enforcement.

In France, fresh unrest erupted as protesters took to the streets for a second consecutive weekend. The country mobilised nearly 70,000 security personnel in response to the demonstrations, which saw police deploying tear gas and water cannons in cities such as Paris, Marseille, and Lyon. While authorities reported around 1,000 arrests, estimates of total participants varied significantly—ranging from 410,000 as stated by government officials to 800,000 according to the organising CGT union. Although the main march in Paris remained largely peaceful, confrontations arose during the dispersal, leading local businesses to board up in anticipation of potential looting.

The ongoing protests in France are timed just months ahead of the forthcoming presidential election, intensifying scrutiny of the government's handling of civil dissent.

Further south in Italy, thousands marched in cities like Milan, Rome, and Turin. Additional security measures were enforced, including a deployment of 500 soldiers in Milan. While the protest in Milan remained mainly peaceful, minor clashes were reported in other cities. The discontent in Italy encompasses a broad spectrum of issues, including calls for political accountability and concerns over education reforms.

In Albania, violence surfaced in the capital, Tirana, as demonstrators demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama. Protesters clashed with police, instigating the use of tear gas to disperse the crowd and igniting fires near government establishments. The demonstrations drew numerous participants, including students, educators, and political opposition members, all demanding reforms such as reduced tuition fees and increased investment in education. The movement has also garnered additional momentum in connection to dissatisfaction surrounding a proposed luxury development project linked to Jared Kushner, son-in-law of former US President Donald Trump.

Serbia held a snap parliamentary election on the same day. The situation has become a battleground for a student-led initiative opposing long-term leader Aleksandar Vucic. Rooted in the aftermath of a tragic incident that left 16 individuals dead in 2024, the movement is focused on anti-corruption and educational improvements. Pre-election polls indicate a close contest, with various factions vying for influence.

In Portugal, police action in Lisbon saw the dismantling of a housing protest camp early Sunday, after a large demonstration advocating for affordable housing took place the previous day. Protesters had set up over 100 tents in Rossio Square, opposing government measures that might exacerbate the housing crisis. With property prices more than doubling since 2017, chants for affordable housing echoed throughout the city as demonstrators expressed concerns regarding rising living costs, particularly impacting younger citizens.

Meanwhile, Spain has experienced peaceful demonstrations, with retirees advocating for the safeguarding of the public pension system amidst wider concerns over possible privatisation. As a snap election looms next month, debates surrounding pension reform continue to intensify.

The series of protests highlights a growing wave of discontent across Europe, driven by economic frustrations and a desire for political accountability. As citizens rally in unprecedented numbers, the impact of these movements on future political landscapes remains to be seen.
