Vivek Ramaswamy's Controversial Campaign Ad Stirs Ohio Election Tensions
The gubernatorial race in Ohio is heating up as a contentious campaign ad from Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has drawn significant criticism. The ad, which features Amy Acton’s estranged mother, has been condemned by Acton herself as 'despicable'.
Acton, the Democratic contender for governor, responded to the ad on Wednesday, stating, "This is despicable, what he's done." The ad includes testimony from her mother, Donna Arthur, who accuses Acton of having 'lied her entire life.' Notably, the ad omits critical information regarding Arthur’s past with her late husband, who faced charges of raping Acton during her childhood, resulting in a custody change for Acton and her brother.
The public backlash surrounding the ad has been severe, prompting condemnation from both political parties. In support of Ramaswamy, former US President Donald Trump defended the ad during a rally in Iowa, urging him to maintain the ad’s presence. He remarked, "Leave it up, and look upstairs and say, 'Thank you God, very much.'"
However, Ramaswamy's strategy may be backfiring, as outgoing Republican Governor Mike DeWine, who has endorsed Ramaswamy, described the ad as 'deeply troubling' and has called for its removal. Acton, addressing the controversy, highlighted that many individuals have encountered trauma and abuse, expressing concern for those affected by the ad’s messaging.
In a recent campaign advertisement, Acton’s brother recounted their traumatic childhood experiences and criticized Ramaswamy for using their past as a political tool. Trump, in another statement, deflected criticism of the ad, placing blame on the media and urging Ramaswamy to persist in his attacks against Acton, whom he described in less than favourable terms.
Frank LaRose, Ohio's Secretary of State, has announced that his office is reviewing complaints related to Ramaswamy's ad, particularly regarding potential discrepancies in legally required disclosures. The Ramaswamy campaign has acknowledged responsibility for the ad and has earmarked $4 million for its promotion across Ohio.
Local news outlet the Columbus Dispatch's editorial board has endorsed Acton, branding the ad as 'revolting and unsettling'. Additionally, Jim Renacci, a former Republican Congressman from Ohio, mentioned on social media that the ad might destabilise the Republican campaign for governor.
In response to the fallout, MK Pritzker, spouse of Illinois Democratic Governor JB Pritzker, pledged $500,000 to support Acton's campaign. US Senator JD Vance has urged fellow Republicans to cease complaints regarding the ad, expressing his own disappointment over the reactions from within his party.
David Lublin, a political expert, commented on the evolving nature of political attack ads in the US, noting their increasing intensity. He suggested that Ramaswamy's actions may stem from a desperate need to shift the balance of momentum in his favour.
Recent polling data indicates a narrow lead for Acton over Ramaswamy, with only a 1% difference, although this data was collected prior to the ad’s release. Should Acton secure victory, she would become the first Democrat to be elected as Ohio’s governor in twenty years.
The midterm election is scheduled for 3 November, as both candidates strive to succeed Governor Mike DeWine in a highly competitive political climate.
