WHO Endorses Bhutan's Achievement in Rabies Elimination

Bhutan has received validation from the World Health Organization (WHO) for successfully eliminating rabies transmitted by dogs. This marks Bhutan as the first country in Southeast Asia to achieve this significant public health milestone.

Rabies is a viral disease that, once clinical symptoms appear, is almost invariably fatal. Nonetheless, deaths from the disease are preventable through effective vaccination programmes aimed at dogs, which target the root of the epidemic. The WHO has emphasised that prompt application of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) can prevent the virus from advancing to the central nervous system following a dog bite. PEP includes thorough washing of wounds, administering a human rabies vaccine, and, when necessary, providing rabies immunoglobulins (RIG) injections.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the WHO, stated that Bhutan's success is a clear demonstration of how human, animal, and environmental health are tightly interconnected. He noted, "By uniting health workers, veterinarians, and communities, Bhutan has shown that the fight against rabies is won not in silos, but through solidarity across all sectors."

The achievement reflects over a decade of dedicated investment in a One Health approach, which acknowledges the intricate relationships among the health of humans, animals, and ecosystems. Disruptions in these relationships can heighten the risk of infectious diseases proliferating among both humans and animals.

The WHO aims to eradicate human deaths resulting from dog-related rabies by 2030. This validation of Bhutan's efforts not only highlights the potential for disease elimination but also the importance of collaboration across various fields in public health and veterinary medicine. Bhutan’s strategies have set a precedent for other nations working towards similar health objectives.
