Vote Counting Underway for Bypolls in India: Key Results Expected
Counting of votes is ongoing in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Puducherry, and Assam as bypolls conclude amid allegations and political scrutiny.

Counting of votes commenced at 8 am on Friday for several by-elections in India, specifically in five assembly seats across Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, as well as one Lok Sabha seat in Assam. This event marks the first electoral assessment for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since it assumed power in West Bengal earlier this year.

In West Bengal, officials began counting at designated centres under stringent security. The process started with postal ballots and Electronically Transmitted Postal Ballots (ETPBs) before transitioning to votes stored in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). The counting is structured into 15 rounds, with separate facilities for postal and ETPB votes. Although the outcome of these bypolls will not impact the BJP's majority—currently holding 207 out of the 294 Assembly seats—the results are closely observed for insights into the party's standing following its recent victory over the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Both constituencies—Nandigram and Rejinagar—boasted high voter turnout, approximately 80%, with Nandigram seeing 80.89% and Rejinagar 80.08%. Despite this, opposition parties raised concerns over alleged voter intimidation and polling irregularities, demanding a new election. The BJP has dismissed these claims, asserting that the voting process remained largely peaceful.

A notable incident during polling was the arrest of Humayun Kabir, the leader of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP), following a clash with law enforcement in Rejinagar. This election was prompted by Kabir vacating the seat in question to retain Nowda.

In Nandigram, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari—who previously defeated TMC leader Mamata Banerjee in the 2021 elections—retained his seat in the recent Assembly election but has stepped back, triggering the bypoll. The BJP's candidate for Nandigram is Hasirani Rath, while Congress's Milan Pradhan is backed by a faction of the TMC. In contrast, a rival TMC faction, led by Ritabrata Banerjee, has presented its own candidate.

Rejinagar will see competitors including BJP candidate Sakharav Sarkar and Mamata-led TMC nominee Rabiul Alam Chowdhury, along with other candidates from the Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

Simultaneously, counting of votes for the Madurantakam (Scheduled Caste) Assembly by-election is taking place at the Integrated Social Development Training Centre in Aathur, Chengalpattu district. Polling here occurred on 6 October, with an estimated voter turnout of 86.26%, slightly down from 93.22% in the previous Assembly election.

The political landscape in Tamil Nadu remains highly competitive, with significant attention on the performance of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), the current ruling party. Major figures in the contest include candidates from the DMK, AIADMK, and CPI(M), among others. The Madurantakam constituency is filled with 27 contestants, adding to the complexity of this by-election.

The counting at both locations is supported by robust security measures to ensure a seamless process, with officials prepared to address any potential issues.

Results from these elections will serve as a barometer for the political climate in both West Bengal and Tamil Nadu as local parties vie for influence in their respective regions.
