Vladimir Putin Affirms India's Global Role in Exclusive Interview
In a recent interview, Russian President Vladimir Putin highlights India's significance as a global player and discusses bilateral trade dynamics.

In a recent exclusive interview with India Today, Russian President Vladimir Putin asserted that India has emerged as a significant player on the global stage, distancing it from its colonial past under British rule. This statement underscores the evolving perception of India in international relations.

During the interview, President Putin addressed the current state of trade between Russia and India, particularly in the context of oil imports. He acknowledged that there has been a slight decrease in trade volumes due to external pressures, particularly from Western nations. However, he reassured that the partnership remains robust, stating, 'There is a certain decline in overall trade turnover during the first nine months of this year. This is just a minor adjustment.' He highlighted that trade in petroleum products and crude oil continues to function effectively in India.

Putin expressed confidence in the bilateral relationship, stating that Russian companies view their Indian counterparts as 'reliable and very serious people.' This sentiment reflects the growing trust and cooperation between the two nations, especially in the energy sector.

The interview also delved into the military cooperation between Russia and India, particularly in relation to advanced weaponry. Responding to queries about the S-400 missile systems, S-500 systems, and Su-57 fighter jets, President Putin emphasised that Russia is 'not merely selling' these technologies but is instead 'sharing' them with India, which he described as a 'reliable and privileged partner.' This commitment to collaboration aligns with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Make in India' initiative, promoting local manufacturing.

Putin pointed to the local production of T-90 tanks and BrahMos missiles as evidence of this trusted partnership. He noted the expertise of Indian specialists, recognising their understanding of the combat capabilities of these systems based on their performance in various conditions.

The conversation also touched on the broader geopolitical implications of energy cooperation amid ongoing sanctions and global political shifts. An unidentified speaker echoed President Putin’s sentiments, stating, 'India is a major global player, not a British colony,' which reinforces the notion that India cannot be treated as it was historically. This perspective highlights India's strategic autonomy in navigating its foreign policy.

The speaker further highlighted that energy cooperation between Russia and India remains resilient despite fluctuating political tides, emphasising that 'over 90% of our transactions are already conducted in national currencies,' thus minimising reliance on Western financial systems. Praising Indian leadership, the speaker remarked, 'Prime Minister Modi is not someone who succumbs to pressure easily,' indicating a strong commitment to national interests.

In addition to addressing trade and military ties, the speaker noted a substantial investment in an Indian oil refinery, which represents one of the largest foreign investments in the sector, exceeding 20 billion US dollars. This investment signifies ongoing efforts to strengthen economic ties amid external challenges.

Overall, the interview and subsequent commentary from President Putin and other officials reflect a deepening partnership between Russia and India, marked by collaboration in trade, military technology, and strategic autonomy in foreign policy. As both nations navigate a complex geopolitical landscape, their relationship appears poised for further development.
