Violence Escalates in Manipur Amid Attacks on Naga Villages

In a significant escalation of violence in Manipur, several houses in the Naga villages of Pipuram and Tapon Namsan were set on fire early on 1 September. This incident occurred less than a day after three Kukis were reportedly killed by militants in the Kangpokpi district, a region that has been a hotspot for ethnic tensions. Superintendent of Police Abhinav stated that the attack was carried out by armed militants from the Kuki community at approximately 4 AM, leading to reports of indiscriminate firing, although there were no reported casualties from the incident.

Witnesses from the affected villages indicate that the chief of Tapon Namsan was injured during the gunfire. The Makui Village Authority has issued a statement accusing Kuki militants of conducting the attack, alleging that they not only fired upon the villages but also destroyed homes and personal belongings, labelled as an orchestrated effort to 'grab' ancestral land from the Liangmai Nagas. The authority noted that this assault followed a recent spate of violence, including a brutal ambush that resulted in the deaths of four villagers in Makui on 27 August.

The ongoing conflicts between the Kuki and Naga communities have further complicated the political landscape in Manipur. On 29 August, following the killings of the Kuki civilians, a group of nine Naga Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah. They expressed their concerns regarding the inaction against Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen and her alleged connections to the Kuki militia.

The violence has raised alarms among local authorities, with repeated calls for enforcement action. The Naga MLAs are demanding arrests of Kuki community leaders they believe are responsible for promoting violence, as well as calls for accountability regarding the attacks on innocent civilians, including a school principal.

Political representatives from both sides have exchanged accusations, intensifying an already fraught state of affairs. The spate of violence has left communities on high alert, with ongoing fears that further escalations may occur. Amid these tensions, the government faces pressure to address the unrest and restore peace in the affected areas. The situation continues to evolve as officials strive to mediate between the conflicting factions in Manipur, underscoring the complexity of the region's ethnic dynamics.
