Violence Erupts in Azad Kashmir as Protests Demand Reforms

Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has called for protesters in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) to demonstrate complete loyalty to the state. His remarks come amid escalating violence in the region, where recent protests have reportedly led to at least 20 fatalities this week.

Protests in AJK, a territory administered by Pakistan but claimed by India, have been driven by supporters of the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC). This anti-government movement is demanding significant economic and governance reforms. Despite being banned under anti-terrorism laws last week, the JAAC has persisted with its protests.

One of the committee's key demands involves the elimination of 12 assembly seats reserved for refugees from Indian-administered Kashmir residing in Pakistan. The JAAC argues that these reserved seats enable mainstream political parties in Pakistan to dominate local governance in AJK.

Khawaja Asif expressed his concerns about the unrest via a post on social media platform X, stating, "Dialogue begins with loyalty and complete obedience to the state." He underscored that certain individuals in AJK, whom he referred to as "misguided brothers," needed to adhere to Article 5 of Pakistan's constitution, which mandates allegiance to the state.

As reported by various sources, the week of unrest has seen violent encounters between JAAC supporters and law enforcement, triggering tragic consequences. Among the deceased are three police officers from Rawalakot and one paramilitary soldier. The police have alleged that JAAC protesters attacked a military-operated hospital in Rawalakot, igniting clashes. The JAAC has refuted these claims, asserting that law enforcement initiated the violence.

The tensions are set against the backdrop of upcoming legislative elections scheduled for July 27 in AJK. This electoral period is particularly sensitive due to the ongoing debates surrounding the reserved assembly seats. The JAAC's campaign faced a significant setback when the Supreme Court of AJK ruled that these seats enjoy constitutional protection and cannot be revoked through administrative means.
