Vinesh Phogat Eliminated in Asian Games Wrestling Trials
Wrestler Vinesh Phogat's aspirations for a return to the competitive wrestling scene faced an abrupt halt during the selection trials for the Asian Games, held at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium. After an extended hiatus of nearly two years following her disappointing experience at the Paris Olympics, Phogat's journey came to an end with a loss in the semifinals.
In her semifinal match in the 53kg category, Vinesh Phogat was defeated by Meenakshi Goyat with a score of 4-6. The match was characterised by heightened tension, featuring interruptions from both competitors' supporters. Phogat initially struggled, yielding a point due to passivity. Goyat seized early control, racing to a 4-1 lead.
Phogat managed to gain momentum by executing a takedown, closing the gap to 4-3. However, Goyat responded effectively, increasing her lead to 6-3. Although Phogat successfully challenged a call, narrowing the score to 6-4, it was not enough to reverse the outcome of the bout.
The atmosphere surrounding the trials was charged with excitement and tension, as evidenced during the earlier fights. Phogat faced considerable challenges, including a particularly intense round against an emerging wrestler, Nishu. Despite initially falling behind after being caught in an open throw, Phogat rallied to secure a narrow 7-6 victory in that bout.
Unfortunately for Phogat, Goyat's performance in the final match was hampered, as she lost 2-3 to Antim Panghal, resulting in further complications and discontent. Phogat's husband, Somvir, who is also her coach, frequently intervened during matches, contributing to the animated atmosphere.
The final roster for the Asian Games includes Dipanshee (50kg), Antim Panghal (53kg), Manisha (57kg), Mansi Ahlawat (62kg), Nisha Dahiya (68kg), and Priya (76kg). Phogat's exit from the trials marks a significant moment following her previous achievements and raises questions about her future in the sport.
