US Withdraws All Bombers from RAF Fairford Amid Terrorism Investigation
The United States has confirmed the withdrawal of all its bombers from RAF Fairford, a British military installation. This action follows a significant security incident currently being investigated by counter-terrorism police in the UK. A spokesperson for the US Department of Defense announced on Sunday that all bombers have been redeployed back to their home bases in America.
The withdrawal is linked to a situation on 27 September, when police were alerted to three suspicious vehicles approaching the airbase located in Gloucestershire. Initially, five men aged between 23 and 25 years old were arrested on suspicion of terrorism-related offences but were later released on bail. A sixth individual, a UK-Iranian national, was apprehended subsequently in London under similar suspicions and has also been released on bail. The total number of arrests has raised concerns regarding the potential involvement of foreign actors in this incident.
Whitehall sources indicated that the decision to withdraw the bombers was indeed prompted by the incident at RAF Fairford but clarified that it was a military-based decision rather than a political one. The UK Ministry of Defence has refrained from making comments on the current situation.
In the wake of the incident, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated that there are strong indications of Iranian involvement but did not disclose any further specifics. Iran has denied any connection to the events surrounding the base.
RAF Fairford has served as a forward operating location for the US Air Force for many years, with recent military operations being conducted there against Iranian targets. The area has seen a notable American military presence, particularly as the UK had granted permission for the US to utilise the base for defensive purposes related to Iran.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently suggested that the situation “clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor,” although he did not provide additional details due to operational security limitations. US President Donald Trump expressed surprise over the release of the five men on bail, asserting that US authorities were well-informed about their activities and would not have permitted their bail under the circumstances.
Moreover, the investigation continues as British counter-terrorism police explore all possible angles concerning foreign-state involvement. The incident has prompted a broader examination of security protocols at military facilities, especially those involved in international operations. Previous statements from police have indicated that no explosive devices were located in the reported vehicles but a quantity of petrol was recovered, leading to further investigation into the intentions behind the vehicles that approached the base.
Discussions regarding the events are ongoing, with officials emphasising the complexity of the situation. Naval and air operations from RAF Fairford into volatile regions are expected to remain on hold as evaluations and security assessments are completed.
