Israeli Airstrike Kills Hamas Military Leader Mohammed Odeh in Gaza
The Israeli strike that killed Mohammed Odeh in Gaza raises tensions as violence persists despite a fragile ceasefire.

The commander of Hamas's military wing, Mohammed Odeh, was killed on Tuesday in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City. This attack comes just days after his predecessor was also killed in a strike. Eyewitness reports indicate that the strike targeted a residential building in a busy market area of the city, resulting in dozens of injuries.

Local medics confirmed that Odeh's wife and two children also perished in the attack. Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with multiple missiles striking the al-Kayali building almost simultaneously, as shoppers prepared for the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha. Rescue operations faced difficulties due to the extensive damage and heavy congestion in the area.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the operation aimed to eliminate Mohammed Odeh was based on months of intelligence gathering. The strike was described as a response to Odeh's activities, including his alleged involvement in planning attacks against Israeli targets during the ongoing conflict.

Hamas confirmed Odeh’s death and stated that his family also lost their lives. A source within Hamas indicated that Odeh had recently taken on the role of head of the Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades, although this was not officially announced. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu characterised Odeh as a key figure behind the recent violence and accused him of orchestrating attacks that harmed Israeli citizens.

Odeh’s predecessor, Izz ad-Din al-Haddad, was killed in a similar airstrike earlier in May, which also targeted a civilian location. The IDF has conducted continued strikes in Gaza following a fragile ceasefire that began on 10 October. However, Hamas has accused Israel of routinely violating this agreement and targeting civilians, with reported casualties exceeding 900 in the recent conflict.

The Gaza health ministry reports that the ongoing military actions have left a significant number of civilians dead, while the Israeli government maintains the right to target Hamas operatives as part of its operations. The situation remains tense, with Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz affirming that Israel aims to prevent Hamas from maintaining control in Gaza. Katz indicated that Israel would pursue those involved in orchestrating attacks against it relentlessly.

The death toll since the onset of the latest conflict is staggering. Approximately 1,200 individuals lost their lives in the initial attacks led by Hamas, with subsequent Israeli military responses claiming many more lives in Gaza, according to health officials in the territory. As the conflict escalates, the feasibility of peace remains a significant concern, with ongoing military campaigns bringing little indication of stability.

Negotiations surrounding a US-led peace initiative for Gaza have also stalled, further complicating efforts to bring calm to the region. The ongoing violence raises serious questions regarding the impact on civilians in Gaza, as fighting continues to displace countless individuals and devastate infrastructure. Further military action by Israel has also occurred in Lebanon targeting Hezbollah, indicating a broader spectrum of conflict in the region.
