US Responds to Iranian Attacks as Tensions Escalate in the Region

President Donald Trump has stated that the United States will take action following Iranian strikes against American personnel stationed in Jordan. The Trump administration is intensifying its economic measures against Iran while also signalling a readiness for military responses. In an interview with Al Jazeera, Joey Hood, a former US ambassador, noted that Trump has recognised the limitations of military force but cautioned that sanctions alone are unlikely to change Iran’s behaviour. Hood pointed out that it took two years of sanctions to bring Iran to negotiate the 2015 nuclear deal, but the current geopolitical landscape is different, with China and Russia not fully aligned with the U.S.

The Israeli military has reportedly deepened its presence in Syria’s Deraa province, south of Damascus, with multiple Israeli military vehicles spotted near Jumla, supported by aerial reconnaissance. This development comes amidst broader tensions in the region.

According to Reuters, Asia's imports of refined fuels have plummeted to their lowest since the beginning of the US-Iran conflict, with Gulf supplies severely restricted. The Gulf region, which typically accounts for about 90% of Middle Eastern crude usage, has seen a reduction of nearly 4 million barrels per day. Data from the commodities analysis firm Kpler indicates that imports of light and middle distillates fell to approximately 5.10 million barrels per day in August, down from 5.61 million barrels per day in July. This reduction aligns closely with the decline in supply from the Middle East, despite Gulf nations possessing the capacity to meet Asian demand.

In a related development, Greece and Israel formalised a defence agreement valued at $3.5 billion, focusing on a multi-layered air defence system. This represents the largest defence deal between the two nations. The deal, signed in Tel Aviv, comes during a period of heightened tension between Greece and its neighbour, Turkey. Greece has been strengthening its military capabilities, with plans to invest about €28 billion by 2036 for modernising its armed forces, including acquiring F-35 fighter jets from the United States and frigates from France and Italy.

Crude oil prices have seen an uptick due to concerns about potential disruptions in supply from the conflict between the US and Iran. Brent crude futures rose by 56 pence, settling at $91.05 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate increased by 83 pence to $86.59 per barrel.

In a separate incident, Fatima Muqattam, an elderly Palestinian woman, was hospitalised after being assaulted by Israeli settlers in the West Bank. Medical sources reported that she and her husband were attacked while trying to protect their livestock in Burqa, highlighting ongoing tensions in the region.

US Vice President JD Vance stated that the current focus for Washington is to ensure the free flow of commerce through the Strait of Hormuz. He emphasised that recent military actions were aimed at preventing Iranian mining activities in the strait. Vance also characterised Iran's leadership as lacking strategic foresight, accusing them of jeopardising oil and gas exports.

Since a ceasefire took effect on April 8, the US has conducted multiple strikes in Iranian territory during periods of escalation. These strikes have targeted various military installations, with the last significant action reported on August 30, when the US targeted Iranian launchers on Larak Island. Despite an agreed ceasefire framework established on June 17, violations have led to renewed military exchanges.

Democratic Senator Mark Warner voiced renewed concern over the escalating conflict, labelling it a “war of choice” and highlighting the impact on oil prices and military resources. He noted that Iran's government has adopted a more extreme stance, and the country continues to enrich uranium amid rising tensions.
