US Proposes June Deadline for Russia-Ukraine Peace Talks, Says Zelensky
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that the United States aims to bring about an end to the ongoing conflict with Russia by June. He stated that both Ukraine and Russia have been invited for negotiations in the US next week. "America has proposed for the first time that the two negotiating teams – Ukraine and Russia – meet in the United States, probably in Miami, in a week. We confirmed our participation," he remarked. There was no immediate reaction from either Washington or Moscow following these announcements.
In past statements, Zelensky pointed out that tensions persist, particularly regarding territorial concessions that Ukraine may be pressured to make. He indicated that there are still many unresolved issues despite discussions about a potential trilateral meeting involving the leaders of both nations. Zelensky acknowledged that the Americans seek a rapid resolution, saying, "The Americans say that they want to do everything by June." He speculated on the influence of domestic political factors in the US, including the upcoming midterm elections, on the urgency of these negotiations.
Amid ongoing diplomatic efforts, hostilities continue as Russian forces persistently target Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Ukrainian energy minister Denys Shmyhal reported another wave of Russian assaults resulted in extensive damage and widespread blackouts, exacerbating the dire situation during bitterly cold weather. Shmyhal detailed that substations and power lines critical to the energy grid were among the targets.
Reports confirmed that over 400 drones and 40 missiles were used in attacks impacting numerous Ukrainian regions on Friday night. Although many were intercepted by air-defence systems, strikes caused significant disruptions. Some regions, such as Lviv, faced extensive power outages affecting thousands.
Shmyhal communicated that Ukraine had requested emergency power supplies from Poland due to the heightened power deficit in the wake of these attacks. The state-owned energy company, Ukrenergo, has indicated a severe increase in the power shortfall stemming from the assaults.
Recent information divulged that attacks have intensified, with a spokesperson for DTEK, the primary operator managing Dobrotvir and Burshtyn power plants, noting these incidents as the tenth significant strike on its facilities since October 2025. They detailed that the number of assaults on energy sites across Ukraine had exceeded 220 since the latest phase of the conflict began nearly four years prior. The strikes have resulted in casualties, including one fatality in the Rivne region and injuries in Zaporizhzhia.
Residents in Kyiv have taken refuge in subway stations, describing the harsh living conditions without heating or electricity. Furthermore, amid these challenges, Ukraine claimed responsibility for attacks on Russian territory, targeting a factory producing missile components in the Tver region, along with another site in Saratov.
Despite these ongoing operations, both countries continue to exchange accusations concerning the insincerity of peace efforts. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has previously stated that Ukraine is failing to engage earnestly in achieving a lasting resolution. As the conflict escalates, the human cost remains staggering, with Zelensky estimating over 55,000 Ukrainian military casualties since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Meanwhile, data gathered indicates that nearly 160,000 individuals have perished among Russian combatants.
The shifting dynamics of the conflict underscore the urgent need for effective dialogue to address widespread humanitarian concerns and restore stability in the region. Discussions scheduled for next week may prove pivotal, as leaders attempt to navigate through escalating tensions towards a potential truce.
