US Imposes Sanctions on Turkish Bank Amid Iran Pressure Campaign
The United States has announced sanctions against Golden Global Investment Bank, a small Turkish financial institution, alongside two of its subsidiaries. This measure is part of an ongoing effort to economically isolate Iran, dubbed 'Operation Economic Outcast'. According to a statement released on the US Treasury Department's website, the Golden Global Investment Bank has a capital of approximately $34 million.
The subsidiaries affected by the sanctions are Golden Global Varlik Kiralama Anonim Sirketi and Golden Global Portfoy Yonetimi Anonim Sirketi. This decision comes shortly after similar sanctions were imposed on the United Arab Emirates branches of Banque Misr, Egypt's second-largest bank.
The US Treasury has termed the Golden Global Investment Bank as a facilitator for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF), alleging that it has enabled transactions amounting to tens of millions of dollars for the group. The Treasury's statement indicated that the bank played a critical role in providing Iranian authorities with access to international banking services, aiding in the movement of funds.
"Türkiye-based Golden Global Yatirim Bankasi Anonim Sirketi was established for the purpose of enabling Iran's rahbar network to transfer oil revenues from China to Turkey, where it could then be converted to cash and gold by rahbar money exchangers," the Treasury added.
Following the sanctions, all property and assets held by the designated entities that are under the control of US persons will be frozen. This includes any interests and properties that must be reported to the Office of Foreign Assets Control.
The sanctions are part of a broader strategy by the United States to target Iranian companies, individuals, and maritime vessels engaged in activities supporting Iran’s military operations, cyberattacks, and unlawful oil trade. The US State Department has stated that these measures target networks associated with acquiring weaponry, harvesting intelligence, and infringing upon US infrastructure security.
US State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott highlighted the objectives of this pressure campaign, emphasising the emphasis on cutting off financial resources critical to the Iranian regime and the IRGC-QF. The sanctions were first unveiled on August 24 and represent a continuation of the US drive to economically isolate Iran.
President Donald Trump has recently ramped up efforts to employ economic sanctions as a tool to weaken Iran’s financial standing, thereby making it more difficult for the Iranian government to sustain its operations. The overall success of these sanctions may hinge on the willingness of other nations to enforce similar measures against Iran’s financial networks.
