US Envoys to Engage in Moscow and Kyiv Peace Talks This Weekend
United States negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are scheduled to visit Russia and Ukraine this weekend as diplomatic efforts intensify to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that he would meet with the envoys on Sunday after their discussions in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday.
Donald Trump, former President of the United States, stated that the envoys would bring forth a proposal aimed at ending the hostilities between Russia and Ukraine. Despite the anticipation surrounding the upcoming meetings, significant differences remain between the two parties.
Earlier on Friday, President Zelensky reported that a Russian drone had struck the office of Oleksandr Poklad, the head of Ukraine's security service, the SBU, in Kyiv. Fortunately, Poklad was unharmed. Following the incident, Zelensky took to social media to express that he had instructed Poklad to respond 'adequately' to the attack.
Witkoff and Kushner, who is Trump’s son-in-law, have previously engaged in multiple visits to Russia, but these talks represent their inaugural visit to Ukraine amidst the current conflict. Zelensky assured that he would guarantee the safety of Russian airspace during the envoys' visit and called upon Russia to reciprocate the gesture for Ukraine.
According to the Russian state news agency Tass, Witkoff and Kushner were expected to arrive in Moscow and Kyiv on 5-6 September, although Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov refrained from confirming specific details, stating, 'I wouldn't announce anything, but when these contacts take place, we will inform you.'
During an international economic forum earlier this week, President Putin remarked that 'there are chances' a peace agreement could be established, emphasizing that any resolution must be agreed upon between Moscow and Kyiv. However, he maintained firm demands regarding territorial concessions from Ukraine, which have been repeatedly rejected by Kyiv and its European allies, who view such terms as tantamount to capitulation.
Since Russia initiated a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, it has gained control over approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory, further complicating efforts for a peaceful resolution.
